Back-to-School Physicals: Setting Your Child Up for a Healthy School Year

As summer comes to a close, families are busy shopping for school supplies, planning schedules, and getting ready for the excitement of a new school year. One of the most important items to add to your back-to-school checklist is your child's annual wellness exam.

A yearly back-to-school physical is about much more than checking a box for school requirements. It is an opportunity to make sure your child is growing and developing well, staying up to date on recommended vaccines, and starting the school year as healthy as possible.

Why Annual Physicals Matter

Children grow and change quickly. During an annual exam, our providers can:

  • Monitor growth and development

  • Check vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall health

  • Review nutrition, sleep, and physical activity

  • Discuss emotional and mental well-being

  • Address school, behavioral, or developmental concerns

  • Manage chronic conditions like asthma or allergies

  • Update medications and recommended immunizations giving your child the healthiest possible start to the school year

These visits help identify concerns early—often before they become bigger problems.

Keep Vaccines Up to Date

Vaccines are one of the best ways to protect your child from serious illnesses while helping keep classrooms and communities healthy.

North Carolina requires certain immunizations for students entering school and specific grade levels. During your child's wellness visit, we'll review their vaccine record, make sure they're up to date, and answer any questions you may have about recommended vaccines, including HPV, flu, and COVID-19.

Need a Sports Physical?

If your child plans to play school sports, we can often complete their sports physical during the same appointment as their annual wellness exam. Just remember to bring any required school or athletic forms.

Building Healthy Habits

Annual checkups are also a great time to talk about healthy habits that help children thrive. Depending on your child's age, we may discuss nutrition, exercise, sleep, mental health, internet safety, injury prevention, and other age-appropriate topics to support their overall well-being.

Schedule Early

Back-to-school appointments fill quickly, so don't wait until the last minute. Scheduling early helps ensure your child is ready for the first day of school with completed forms, up-to-date immunizations, and the confidence that they're healthy and ready to learn.
