About the Role
This internship would be through a new Public Health AmeriCorps service, called HeartCorps. This program is committed to improving blood pressure control and cardiovascular health in rural communities throughout the U.S. Interns selected will work with High Country Community Health's hypertension nurse for 11 months. Their duties may include:
✔ Supporting blood pressure self-monitoring initiatives
✔ Increasing adoption of evidence-based blood pressure measurement and management
✔ Facilitating blood pressure, tobacco and nutrition security screenings and referrals to care
✔ Connecting health centers with social platforms to facilitate ongoing screening and referral
for social needs
✔ Establishing local support for patients/community members in navigating the care or
resources they need
✔ Building community capacity to support healthy living and skill building including
organizing, connecting and/or delivering community training and education opportunities.
✔ Engaging local media in blood pressure and healthy living promotion
✔ Mobilizing the community in addressing contributing conditions such as nutrition security
✔ Engaging youth in health promotion via cultivating and managing volunteer clubs in local
schools or community organizations
The American Heart Association recruits interns from local communities, but
there are some members who choose to relocate. Public Health AmeriCorps is a professional
development opportunity, and it is the responsibility of the AHA to provide foundational training and
leadership opportunities for members. While some may have advanced degrees or experience, most will have a passion to make a difference.
